Seasonal respiratory viruses in adult ICU patients
نویسندگان
چکیده
Respiratory viruses are frequently detected in adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and are increasingly being recognised for their role as causal agents in severe respiratory tract infections. Diagnostic sensitivity and time to result have greatly improved with the advent of molecular diagnostics. However, the burden of viral respiratory tract infections in adults remains unclear, and challenges persist in the adequate interpretation of test results and clinical implications on the adult ICU, especially for non-influenza viruses. Many promising antivirals for influenza infection are in clinical development. This review describes the epidemiology, diagnostics, prevention, therapeutic interventions and clinical challenges of seasonal respiratory viruses in adult critically ill patients.

Detection of Seasonal Influenza H1N1 and H3N2 Viruses using RT-PCR Assay during 2009 Flu Pandemic in Golestan Province
Abstract Background and Objective: The emergence of a novel H1N1influenza A virus of animal origin with transmissibility from human to human poses pandemic concern. Current subtypes of Seasonal influenza A viruses spread in human are influenza A H1N1 influenza A H3N2 and influenza type B viruses. The aim of this study was to determine current strains of the H3N2 and new H1N1 subtypes of influe...
متن کاملSeasonal Influenza A H1N1pdm09 Virus and Severe Outcomes: A Reason for Broader Vaccination in Non-Elderly, At-Risk People
BACKGROUND Recent pandemics of influenza A H1N1pdm09 virus have caused severe illness, especially in young people. Very few studies on influenza A H1N1pdm09 in post-pandemic periods exist, and there is no information on the severity of both seasonal influenza A(H1N1) and A(H3N2) from the same season, adjusting for potential confounders, including vaccine. METHODS AND RESULTS We performed a re...

Background: Acute respiratory tract infections, both bacterial and viral, cause 4.5 million childhood deaths worldwide, most of which occur in developing countries. Parainfluenza viruses, of the paramyxoviridae family, are among the common causes of acute respiratory infections, giving rise to 30% of respiratory infections in children before school age. The four parainfluenza viruses that cause...
متن کاملHospitalized Children with 2009 Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1): Comparison to Seasonal Influenza and Risk Factors for Admission to the ICU
BACKGROUND Limited data are available describing the clinical presentation and risk factors for admission to the intensive care unit for children with 2009 H1N1 infection. METHODS We conducted a retrospective chart review of all hospitalized children with 2009 influenza A (H1N1) and 2008-09 seasonal influenza at The Children's Hospital, Denver, Colorado. RESULTS Of the 307 children identifi...
متن کاملA Narrative Review of Influenza: A Seasonal and Pandemic Disease
Influenza is an acute respiratory disease caused by the influenza A or B virus. It often occurs in outbreaks and epidemics worldwide, mainly during the winter season. Significant numbers of influenza virus particles are present in the respiratory secretions of infected persons, so infection can be transmitted by sneezing and coughing via large particle droplets. The mean duration of influenza v...
